What Is Pacemaker Implantation?

Pacemaker implantation is a specialized medical procedure designed to treat heart rhythm disorders, also known as arrhythmias. During this procedure, a small electronic device called a pacemaker is surgically implanted under the skin, typically in the chest area. The pacemaker consists of a pulse generator and one or more leads (thin wires) that are carefully threaded through a vein and positioned in the heart.

Why Do I Need a Pacemaker?

Bradycardia: If your heart beats too slowly (bradycardia), a pacemaker can help regulate your heart rate and ensure it stays within a healthy range.

Heart Block: A condition where the electrical signals in your heart are delayed or blocked, leading to an irregular heartbeat. A pacemaker can help stimulate the heart to maintain a normal rhythm.

Tachycardia Bradycardia Syndrome: This condition involves episodes of both fast (tachycardia) and slow (bradycardia) heart rates. A pacemaker can help manage these fluctuations and maintain a stable heart rate

Heart Failure: In some cases of heart failure, particularly those with conduction system abnormalities, a pacemaker may be recommended to improve heart function and symptoms.

Types of Pacemakers

Single-Chamber Pacemakers: These pacemakers have one lead, which is attached either to the atrium (upper chamber) or the ventricle (lower chamber) of the heart.

Dual-Chamber Pacemakers: These pacemakers have two leads, one positioned in the atrium and the other in the ventricle. Dual-chamber

pacemakers: allow for more natural coordination between the upper and lower chambers of the heart.

Biventricular Pacemakers (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy): Also known as CRT devices, these pacemakers have three leads – one in the right atrium, one in the right ventricle, and one in the left ventricle. They are used to treat heart failure by synchronizing the contractions of the heart's ventricles.

Reasons for Pacemaker Implantation

Symptomatic Bradycardia: If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, fatigue, or shortness of breath due to a slow heart rate, a pacemaker may be recommended to regulate your heartbeat.

Heart Block: Complete heart block or other conduction system abnormalities can disrupt the normal electrical signals in the heart, leading to bradycardia or irregular heart rhythms.

Tachycardia-Bradycardia Syndrome: If you have episodes of both fast and slow heart rates, a pacemaker may be necessary to maintain a stable heart rate and prevent symptoms.

Heart Failure: In some cases of heart failure, particularly those with conduction system abnormalities, a pacemaker may be recommended to improve heart function and symptoms.
